Good Morning Bert!
Further to your request I have some cost information that will hopefully be
of value to you.
Annual Maintenance: Clearwater Station Bridge # 0833
The Ministry’s maintenance expectation for this and all structures in its
inventory include:
* Annual inspections (more frequently if problems occur.)
* Washing, cleaning, (very important with the use of road deicers,
reduces long term maintenance)
* Painting (wood and metal components) also important to reduce long
term maintenance.
* Deck repairs, steel: (See note below)
* Deck Repairs wood: annual deck patching as required, and
replacement every 5 to 7 years.
* Vehicle damage repairs, as and when required.
Annual maintenance for the above items for this structure is usually about
$18,000.
This figure does not include vehicle damage. The incident last year caused
by an over height load, was slightly over $10,000.That issue is still
unresolved and as yet there has been no compensation for it.
Deck:
I have drawn attention to the steel deck in the above maintenance items as
it is by design problematic. As you know it is a steel grid type which for
snow removal is great, however this particular design is prone the metal
fatigue and breakage of the grid components.
Annual steel deck repairs are in the area of $10,000. This of course
contributes the high annual maintenance costs.
Projected Life: 25 years
Replacement: $4,000,000 at current costs
Deck Replace: Steel $500,000 at current costs
Deck Replace: Wood $15,000 at current costs
Steel portion was last painted in 1992, at a cost of $400,000, it is hoped
we can get another 15 years service from the existing paint.
During my last inspection I noted some very minor rot in the treated
substructure components, piles, caps, corbels ect. Based on my observations
there is probably 10 years of service until this needs to be addressed.
I trust this will be helpful for you, feel free to call if you have
questions.
Regards;
Bill.

Hi Bill: The incorporation committee is assessing different boundaries for
an incorporation study.
They are in need of information on what yearly costs for maintenance would
be as well as the projected life of the bridge ,and what the replacement
and/or rehab might involve.
They would then use that info and compare it to increased revenues from
assessments across the river.
Thanks for your help....Bert
