Itinerary & Day Trips

Itinerary Choices

Day 1 -  On Two Feet- Easy

  • Have breakfast at one of our many restaurants or if your are staying at one of our many Bed & Breakfasts
  • Drive to Spahats Falls (10km from Infocentre) where you will see our volcanic history carved out by glaciation.
  • Continue drive to parking area and hike to refreshing Moul Falls where you can literally touch the waterfall and feel your distractions wash away.  Return to parking area and continue driving north up Clearwater Valley Road.
  • Stop for lunch at one of the restaurants along the way.
  • Drive to Green Mountain Viewing Tower for a jaw-dropping view-scape of our pristine wilderness (just after the Park Entrance approximately 39 km from Infocentre).
  • Continue on to Dawson Falls (42km from Infocentre) our mini Niagra falls which is 91m wide.
  • Drive over the Mushbowl bridge and turn left on the pavement to our famous Helmcken Falls where the Murtle River falls 143m to the abyss below.  Feel the freedom and the power of Nature.
  • And if you like to play perhaps a round of golf may lift your spirits.
  • Afterwards, enjoy a relaxing meal and an evenings rest at one of many facilities closer to the Park Entrance or directly within the community of Clearwater.

OR

Day 1 – On Two Feet – Moderate

  • Breakfast at one of our many restaurants and ask for a packed lunch for the day.
  • Driving Tour of our easily accessible scenic sights:
  • Spahats Falls where you will see our volcanic history carved out by glaciation (10km from Infocentre).
  • Continue drive to parking area and hike to refreshing Moul Falls where you can literally touch the waterfall and feel your distractions wash away.  Return to parking area and go and meet with one of our reputable guiding outfitters (Visit www.wellsgraycountry.ca/info/index.htm for more information on our guiding businesses) to hike the Trophies Mountains (turnoff to this area is located 12km up Clearwater Valley Road from the Infocentre).
  • Explore our vast wilderness and our rolling carpet of fragrant alpine flower meadows in the Trophy Mountain Alpine Meadows.  Only a 45 minute hike to the start of the alpine and the rest of the time is determined by how far you wish to explore.
  • After the days activities, enjoy a relaxing meal and an evenings rest at one of many facilities closer to the Park entrance or within the community of Clearwater.

Day 2 – Go Ahead – Get Wet – Adventurous

  • Have breakfast at one of our many restaurants or if your are staying at one of our many Bed & Breakfasts
  • Go rafting with one of our outfitters – Interior Whitewater Expeditions or Riverside Adventures
  • Then replenish your thrist and hunger with a tasty lunch at any one of our cafes.
  • Take a Voyageur Canoe Trip with Riverside Adventures or go kayaking with either Interior Whitewater Expeditions, Liquid Lifestyles or Riverside Adventures
  • Afterwards, enjoy a relaxing meal and an evenings rest at one of many facilities closer to the Park entrance or within the community of Clearwater.

Day 2 – Go Ahead – Get Wet – Paddling

  • Have breakfast at one of our many restaurants or if your are staying at one of our many Bed & Breakfasts.  Pick up a picnic lunch for the day.
  • Drive up to Clearwater Lake (60 km from Infocentre) to go canoeing on the peaceful and crystal clear waters of Clearwater Lake.  This can be done with guides or self-guided.  You could spend the whole day exploring alongside the lake, watching the wildlife and waterfowl.  Perhaps stop on one of many sandy beaches and enjoy the sun, relax or read a good book.
  • Or you can drive up to Clearwater Lake and go on breath taking boat tour up Clearwater Lake to the end of Azure Lake and have a picnic at Rainbow Falls.  Enjoy the aroma of an old growth cedar forest misted by the falls.  You’ll feel your lungs rejuvenated by the forest filtered air.  This round trip is 4 hours in length, but well worth the time.  After all, you came here to rejuvenate, feel alive and strengthen your spirit abused by hectic scheduling.
  • Drive back down Clearwater Valley and visit Bailey’s Chute where the salmon fight the rapids in August.  Should you wish to really fill the day and stretch your legs you can enjoy The Bailey Chute trail which is a 1.5 hour circular hike.  There are even two more falls and a small lake to enjoy.
  • Afterwards, enjoy a relaxing meal and an evenings rest at one of many facilities closer to the Park entrance or within the community of Clearwater.

Day 3 – On the Saddle – By Mountain Bike & Horse

  • Have breakfast at one of our many restaurants or if your are staying at one of our many Bed & Breakfasts
  • Followed by guided mountain biking in Wells Gray Park
  • Take along a packed lunch or Stop for lunch at one of our many restaurants.
  • Horseback riding at Wells Gray Guest Ranch, Trophy Mountain Buffalo Ranch, Helmcken Falls Lodge or on a real working ranch in Vavenby at Vavenby Trail Rides, there are many options available.  Duration can be anywhere from a couple of hours to overnight trips to cattle roundups. 

Day 3 – On the Saddle – By Horse

  • Have breakfast at one of our many restaurants or if your are staying at one of our many Bed & Breakfasts
  • Horseback riding at Wells Gray Guest Ranch, Trophy Mountain Buffalo Ranch, Helmcken Falls Lodge or on a real working ranch in Vavenby at Vavenby Trail Rides, there are many options available.  Duration can be anywhere from a couple of hours to overnight trips to cattle roundups.

Here are some other suggestions for things to do:

Come join one of our many tours in Wells Gray Country – Clearwater.  Learn the history of early pioneers and how to raise sheep on a heritage sheep farm.  Aveley Ranch Farm Tours on Heritage Sheep Farm and Experience our Farm Holiday.Tours go from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and usually take 2 -3 hours for all the activities.  They include puppet shows and hayrides, tea and treats in the tea house, feeding chickens and collecting eggs, and of course seeing the sheep when lambs are born, the art of sheep sheering and sheep herding.  Visiting the shepherds in the fields are longer trips taking up to 6 hours.
Many have also enjoyed the trip back to the past on board the sternwheeler on Dutch Lake.

Listen to a narrative on the history of Dutch Lake Resort and Clearwater as well as interesting facts on world renowned Wells Gray Park while enjoying the scenery and wildlife on Dutch Lake. (30 min ride)

Perhaps you’ve wondered where those tasty fish you caught came from and how they are reared – check out our local fish hatchery.  Clearwater Trout Hatchery staff provides self-guided tours with ample opportunity to see fish being reared.  Information is provided through short audio-video presentations and staff is on hand to answer questions. Rod lending program available.

Or perhaps your way of enjoying and comprehending nature’s beauty is through a bird’s eye view from a helicopter or plane.  Clearwater based helicopter sightseeing tours from 20 minutes or longer in duration.  Charter flights and air taxi flights also available.  Wells Gray Air Services offers small airplane flights over scenic Wells Gray Provincial Park with various durations available.
